What changed

  • Canada imposes counter-tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on over 700 U.S.-origin products, covering $27.6 billion in imports, effective 12:01 a.m. September 8, 2026.
  • Rates match the corresponding U.S. Section 338/232 rate per product.
  • Tariffs apply at the tariff-item level based on classification and CUSMA origin marking rules. Broad product categories are not a reliable guide.
  • Goods in transit on September 8 are exempt.
  • Hardest hit: steel and aluminum, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics, electronics.
  • Existing surtax orders (including autos) remain; some steel and aluminum counter-tariffs rise from 25% to 50%.
  • A remission framework exists for exceptional relief. Support is available via the Canada Strong Diversification Fund, administered through the Strategic Response Fund.

Important
Tariff classification, origin determination and duty assessment rest with the Canada Border Services Agency. All figures are illustrative estimates based on client-supplied data, not a customs ruling or determination of tariff liability. Counter-tariffs apply at the tariff-item level; broad product categories are not a reliable guide. MAVORAIQ does not guarantee funding approval or remission eligibility. Users should verify with a licensed customs broker before acting. MAVORAIQ is not a licensed customs broker and does not provide customs brokerage advice.
